Highland Cheerleaders Earn High Honors at UCA Camp

Following a highly successful week of competition at the Universal Cheerleading Association Camp (UCA) held at Coco Key Resort in Cincinnati, Ohio, the Highland High school cheerleaders won the honor of participating in the pre-game performance of the 2010 Capital One Bowl. The game will be held at the Florida Citrus Bowl Stadium in Orlando, Fla.

The Highland High School Varsity and Junior Varsity squads along with the Highland Middle School squad attended the UCA Camp in Cincinnati for four days and three nights. Several schools from Ohio attended the UCA camp. The participating teams were required to perform a new dance or cheer and were evaluated and scored on originality, poise, spirit and uniformity. The scores achieved each day helped qualify teams for the Capital One Bowl.  Highland High School won the week overall and became Camp Champs.  Highland Varsity with 6 returning seniors won FIRST place in the home pom dance and also won FIRST place in the Xtreme Routine.   The team earned ALL superior ribbons for the Xtreme routine, dance and cheer.

UCA is recognized as a leader in the sport of cheerleading across the U.S., with many of its students going on to compete at some of the largest and nationally televised competitions in the country.  Spirit, Improvement and Leadership trophy awards are given out throughout the camp; but, the most popular is the Spirit Banana. The Spirit Banana is given to teams who are always doing chants and showing a lot of enthusiasm at different times during the camp. The Highland team won the banana twice during the week.

Lauren Bauman and Sarah Szekely (both seniors) were in the finals for the Varsity jump contest.  Hannah Krochta was a finalist in the JV jump contest and Carolyn Palacek and Bethany Vikowski were finalists in the freshman jump off.   Lauren Bauman and Lauren Wolford were also finalists in the dance diva competition.

Several Highland cheerleaders competed for a spot on the All American Cheer Squad.  Girls are selected to try out based on superior cheerleading skills at camps across the country. Only the top 10% of the cheerleaders who attend UCA summer camps earn the chance to march in the holiday spectacular. The girls who make All American have the opportunity to perform in the London Parade before one million spectators lining the parade route. The dates are December 26, 2009 - January 2, 2010. Senior Co-Captains, Lauren Bauman and Lauren Wolford, along with returning team mates; Caroline Keller and Sarah Szekely and junior Crysta Menefee became part of this elite group!

Highland Teams are looking forward to a great season of cheering for the Highland football and basketball teams and look forward to seeing YOU in the stands! Go Hornets and congratulations to our fine cheerleading squads!
